 Animated icons being CPU intensive is a known issue and is the reason that
 there is a "Enable buddy icon animation" preference.

 I suggest that you don't use animated smiles.

 I don't remember offhand if it is a GTK+ issue or a Pidgin issue, but
 patches to improve the situation are always welcome.
