Comment:

 Yes, inside of the buddy list, buddies are listed with their green balls
 and can be chatted with if selected.

 In the notification area, pidgin's icon has the gray X marking itself as
 offline.  It also lists itself as offline from the drop down menu located
 at the pidgin buddy list.
