Comment:

 Now, this IS strange.  The copy of Pidgin that I installed on my VM at
 work (same OS, same version of pidgin) refuses to display *any* buddy
 icons.  They're downloaded and I can browse to them in my .purple folder,
 but they're not showing in either my buddy list or in conversations.

 I don't know why.

 However, even assuming that's an unrelated bug -- is there a knob I can
 tweak that will disable the display of buddy icons, to see if it's an
 issue in the display code?
