 Okay, this is now confirmed.  There is one specific user on my buddy list
 with a "toxic icon", and it is the last icon loaded in the most recent
 debug file.

 Having GTK attempt to display this icon leads to the crash.  GTK version
 is 2.14.6 rev A.

 If I tell pidgin not to display extended status in the buddy list, the
 system connects fine.  I am able to hover my mouse over every other user
 just fine.  Hovering my mouse over this one person crashes it, the system
 goes unresponsive and dr watson shows up a few moments later.

 In case this turns out to be more widely exploitable, I'm not going to
 upload the icon to this bug, but if you give me an email address, I can
 mail it (or tell you the AIM name to contact).
