 Is the system tray icon actually there?

 What does the debug log (Help->Debug Window) say when you close the Buddy
 List window?

 You are using the "X" to close the window, not the "-" to minimize it,
 right?

 What happens when you uncheck "Show the Buddy List" from the Tray Icon
 context menu?
