 Pidgin displays the italics you type out after hitting ctrl+i, but the
 people you talk to on Gchat can't actually see any italics because they're
 unsupported. When talking to Gchat contacts using Pidgin, Pidgin should
 disable the ctrl+i functionality entirely, because the italics aren't
 communicable and so the Pidgin user thinks he is making a change in what
 he types  and what the other person sees when he isn't.

 I am a big user of italics and only recently found out that nobody could
 see them on gchat, and boy was I pissed.
