 Here's an example of the second paragraph copy/pasted into Pidgin and then
 pasted here, with asterisks replacing the added spaces:

 When I copy text from another program like Firefox or Chrome and paste *it
 into a chat window in Pidgin, I get extra space characters in long
 *passages of text. Pasting the same text into other programs does not
 *exhibit this problem.

 I can confirm that they seem to occur at approximately every 72
 characters.
