 I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, pidgin 2.6.6.

 When I fire up pidgin, black boxes appear in the upper right corner of my
 screen, notifying me of the online status of each and every one of my
 contacts.  It can take several minutes, and the whole while I can't see
 that part of the page unless I put my cursor over it, and even then it
 only becomes transparent, it doesn't go away.

 It's so annoying, that I have occasionally decided I don't need to use
 pidgin that badly, so I kill the application.

 Doesn't matter.  The black boxes keep popping up, through my whole list,
 even though pidgin is not supposed to be running.
