 An additional comment.  While this seems totally random in terms of its
 occurrence (and so it's vaguely possible that I'm just being lucky), I
 noticed that when I leave the Pidgin debug window open (which I first
 started doing on the off-chance that I could see something obvious in it),
 Pidgin doesn't seem to crash at all.  I have no idea why this would affect
 any sort of crashing, but it seems to be a workaround.
