 Same issue observed using Pidgin 2.9.0-3 on Debian Testing (Wheeze), both
 amd64 and i386 (installed from Debian repos)

 There is no other AIM connection for along time (a few months) but issue
 occurs anyway.
 The password is definitively correct: "Incorrect password" message appears
 if incorrect password is provided.

 It seems to me something is changed in protocol/server so it rejects
 connection with such irrelevant error message.

 Vote to investigate what a heck is going on :-)
