New description:

 Simply stated, my display picture for yahoo messenger isn't showing to
 official client users. Its not uploading to the yim servers, as the
 picture associated with my ids aren't appearing here
 http://img.msg.yahoo.com/avatar.php?yids=the_yahoo_id I tested it today
 between a few machines running 2.10.1, and pictures work properly from
 pidgin to pidgin user, but not to official clients.

 edit: All of a sudden some one said my display picture had appeared, and
 when I checked the above link with my id, the image was there.  I did a
 little more testing, and it seemed that once I logged into the official
 YIM client, went into the display picture settings and changed it to
 "Share my display image" or something akin to that, I could change the
 picture from within pidgin, and what other users and the yim server saw
 were properly reflected.
