New description:
Note: The version I am installing is pidgin-2.10.1-offline.exe, but I am
not given the option to select that version 2.10.1 on this site at this
time.
Error message received when installing:
Pidgin 2.10.1 Setup
Error Installing Spellchecking
(http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/en_US.zip).
If retrying fails, manual installation instructions are at:
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#manual_win32_spellcheck_installation
Following the URL soup:
1) Site no longer responds to FTP or HTTP or even PING requests:
http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/
2) 1st option given on
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#manual_win32_spellcheck_installation.
This site clearly states that DictInstall is no longer being maintained,
and is not available for download at OpenOffice.org anymore. They refer
you to the SourceForce page.
http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/dictinstall/
3) The SourceForge page we are sent to has very few dictionaries.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooodocs/files/spell%20and%20hyph%20dictionaries/15012002/
4) The 2nd option given on
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#manual_win32_spellcheck_installation.
This site has an incomplete list of dictionaries, which are actually
located at ftp.gnu.org, not aspell.net.
http://aspell.net/win32/
5) Finally, we arrive at a more complete and somewhat maintained (guessing
by timestamps) collection of dictionaries that can finally be downloaded.
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/w32/
Conclusion:
Pidgin should get dictionary EXEs from ftp.gnu.org or a mirror.
Note that the source files in http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/ need to
be compiled to generate the *.dic and *.aff data files used by Pidgin.
Also note: There seems to have been some ASpell development to a version
0.51-1, 6.0-0, 7.0-0 and 7.1-0, not sure if a migration would be indicated
at some point.
