 Yes, you need to use clientLogin when setting the encryption to "when
 available" due to the nature of the underlying protocol.  It's not
 possible to determine if encryption is available or not unless using the
 clientLogin authentication method, which is actually more secure than the
 older mechanism.  This is part of why both the use of clientLogin and the
 "Use encryption if available" setting are the defaults.
