Comment:

 I think given the message in the debug log above ('Trying to find
 alternative connection'), what Pidgin should be capable of doing is to NOT
 attempt find alternative connections if the original connection fails.
 I'll set up my development environment over the next day or two and see if
 I can bang out some kind of temporary fix (short of re-engineering all
 lookups and connections, etc.)
