New description:

In Ubuntu 10.10 x64, if you're using a Java applet that produces sound
(specifically any time I am taking a class on skillport.com), all Pidgin
sounds will not play. When the Java applet closes, all of the sounds that
didn't play will try to play at once. If Pidgin is playing a sound when
said Java applet first opens, the Java applet will not produce any sound.
I'm not sure if this affects other versions of Linux. This occurs with
the default Pulseaudio sound system and the default sound settings in
 Pidgin.
