 Gah, I wrote up a comment on this a while ago, but trac keeps timing out
 on me.

 libpurple calls res_init() (which re-reads /etc/resolv.conf) under these
 conditions:
    * A dns resolver child process returns an error (fingerprint: "Error
 resolving %s:" in the debug logs)
    * Looking up a SRV or TXT record returns an error (fingerprint:
 "res_query returned an error")
    * libpurple is built with !NetworkManager suport, NM is running, and
 libpurple receives an NM_STATE_CONNECTED state event

 Are you actually running Pidgin/libpurple 2.7.9?  What errors are you
 seeing in the Help->Debug Window when resolution fails?
