 That's either Google having issues or something in between you acting
 badly.

 If you look at lines 156, 176, 196, 216, 240, 260, 282, 304, 324, 344, 364
 you'll see that starttls is not being offered as a feature while one line
 383 it is.

 I don't know what is causing this but that's the problem. During each
 failed attempt pidgin isn't being told that using encryption is something
 that it can do.
