Comment:

 Does this only happen for IRC channels?

 Do you have a custom outgoing font set in the pidgin preferences?

 Are you running KDE? Are you using a Qt-GTK+ theme? Does changing GTK+
 themes cause this problem to go away?

 This is one of the few remaining bugs in the auto-sizing input box and
 isn't one that we have been able to consistently reproduce (even the
 people who have it can't reproduce it after fixing it and often don't
 actually make any real changes to fix it).
