Comment:

 None of this should be necessary if pidgin is built with NetworkManager
 support and NM is functioning properly as pidgin should detect the network
 going away and sign itself offline and detect the network coming back and
 sign itself back online.

 That being said what did you want us to do with the script you provided?
 It isn't really sensible for pidgin to ship a script like that and there
 doesn't seem to be anything about pidgin that needs to change to support
 this.
