 After finding no help in the Pidgin FAQ or website about this exact issue
 I emailed Pidgin support. The response was as follows:

 The link, if you're interested, refers users to ''4-year old'' thread with
 multiple proposed solutions to versions of the software going back to
 2.0.0. Meanwhile this "font issue" had never reared its head in ''any
 other'' programs I typically use on my computer. Or in any proprietary
 clients I've tried, or in browser-based IM clients like www.imo.im, which
 is my new default for IMing.

 Could you imagine Firefox improperly rendering Asian scripts for Windows
 users at ''its'' 2.0 release? Chinese web users are set to surpass native-
 English speaking web population in a couple years, with QQ alone already
 boasting 100 million+ users. Good luck to the Pidgin team trying to offer
 a credible open-source alternative if you ignore a glaring issue like this
 for so long...
