#13199: MSN friendly name not set properly if it begins with chinese characters

 I recently upgraded from 2.7.7 to 2.7.9 and noticed that it is no longer
 setting my friendly name correctly in MSN.

 I use three chinese characters for my name: 孫智光 (the name my chinese
 teacher game me!). Everything was working fine with 2.7.7 but when I
 upgraded to 2.7.9, the first character was replaced by two "unknown"
 symbols: a black diamond with a white ? in the middle. My friends on MSN
 saw them too.

 Normally, if I want to change my name, the old name is already present in
 the "Set Friendly Name" dialog, but when this problem occurs, the textbox
 is empty.

 If I try using those three characters preceded by any number of spaces I
 get the same thing but if I type any string that includes at least one
 character that isn't a space or a chinese character, then I can include
 those three characters after without any problem. The problem only seems
 to occur then the first non-white char is a chinese one: "孫智光" " 孫智光" "不好!
 孫智光" "孫智光 孫智光" are all bad (in the third case, 不 is broken; in the last
 case, only the first 孫 is broken) but " x 孫智光" and "x 孫智光" work fine.

 Apologies if this is a duplicate, but I couldn't find anything like it
 using search.
