 Okay, the stock {{{nsswitch.conf}}} here contains:

 {{{
 hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
 }}}

 I tried changing {{{mdns4}}} to just {{{mdns}}} (to match your line), and
 restarted Pidgin (assuming that's enough to cause it to reload
 {{{nsswitch.conf}}}), but found no difference: the IPv6 dnsquery on
 connect still fails the same way.
