Comment:

 Everything there looks correct; you're connecting to a Google IP and the
 cert is Google's (at least, from a cursory glance -- admittedly I could
 fake a chain that looks exactly like that), so I don't think your
 connection is being proxied or anything.

 This definitely looks like a Google Talk server issue to me.  You're
 likely connecting to different clusters (or different parts of a cluster)
 when you move around, which may account for why it works sometimes but not
 others.
