Comment:

 The sasl plugins are not pidgin specific, they are plugins for Cyrus SASL.
 pidgin does not use gsasl. Your other clients likely are either using
 gsasl which either has anonymous support built-in or has the anonymous
 module installed or they are using some internal anonymous method support.
