 I don't think it's architecture-specific, but maybe it has to do with
 configuring into a separate build directory. I'm attaching the config.log
 from my amd64 machine with the issue.

 /usr/src/debian/work/build-area/pidgin-2.9.0% ldd
 build/libpurple/protocols/gg/.libs/libgg.so | grep libgadu
 /usr/src/debian/work/build-area/pidgin-2.9.0%
