New description:

 I use a corporate XMPP server, in case this makes any difference. If I
 change my status to Offline, then change it back to Online, my nickname
 reverts to default for some group chats.

 In Pidgin 2.9.0, when I then try to change my nickname back via "/nick
 Michael Pollard (MT)", Pidgin crashes. This command worked properly in
 2.7.x.

 I reinstalled Pidgin to add the debug symbols. I was getting report file
 updates before this, but report file updates seem to have stopped when I
 reinstalled Pidgin and added the debug symbols - the last error report was
 3:06am, but the last crash (and log) were from 4:01am. I have attached
 both in case they are helpful.
