 point taken. I dove into configurations and found a setting I've checked
 ages ago: automatically set "away" status on idle.

 ok, so I take it that prpl has an '''extra''' status that yahoo does not.
 Which is not the same thing with yahoo not making a distinction between
 the two, which implies knowing of the two in the first place.

 anyway, I '''guess''' prpl or whomever maps "do not disturb" to busy with
 "Busy" message and "away" to busy with "Away" message. And god knows what
 it does with extended away (which btw, it's not available from the main
 form (buddy list))

 the solution in this case is damn simple: just append/replace the user
 message, if any, to/ the "default" one (Busy/Away).
 so, when in pidgin you have "do not disturb - msg", in yahoo becomes "busy
 - Busy - msg" or "busy - msg".
 if you have "away - msg" it becomes "busy - Away - msg" or "busy - msg"
