 I have had this same problem for quite a few months. A friend adds me, i
 accept, she appears online, we chat, i log off, i log in the next day and
 she appears offline when not. I have tried deleting her and re-adding her
 and the problem persists. Heck, i even tried other IM clients but i get a
 similar problem :s i haven't been able to add a single buddy without
 problems since last year. Currently using 2.7.11 on ubuntu 11.04
