 I suspect you need to:
 {{{
 sudo apt-get build-dep pidgin
 }}}

 And then:
 {{{
 ./configure --enable-gcc-hardening --enable-linker-hardening --disable-
 perl
 }}}

 It turns out that my patch breaks the perl build support. How utterly
 annoying. Everything else works with the above on Ubuntu 11.04 - does that
 work for you?
