 I updated to:

 Pidgin 2.7.11 (libpurple 2.7.11)
 266042fff48838ac6672bcde8cf02babb5d5bae0

 And tested this again.  This time, instead of the scrambled text, none of
 my messages were received. When I closed the Direct IM connection, new
 messages were received, but the text that I sent while the connection was
 active appears to have been lost.
