Comment(by Ouizardus):

 I also have experienced this problem. It seems Pidgin tries to retain the
 text formatting from the source. However, I very seldom ever want this to
 happen; I always want text I paste in the chat window to be the same font,
 size, etc. as the rest of my messages (i.e. my default font).

 There should be an option to disable/prevent the font from changing when
 pasting text into the message window, or similarly make the default
 message font override the source's font (unless an Undo operation occurs
 (Ctrl+Z), in case the user does happen to want the source formatting, for
 some special reason).

 I also noticed a closely-related curious issue. My default font is bold,
 but whenever I type a message, and instead of sending it, I first
 highlight all the text, cut it, then later paste it back into the same
 window (I do this often when I'm typing a message, and I see the other
 person starts typing also, so I cut my message and wait for their response
 before I reply with whatever I was saying), the pasted text is not bold
 any longer, when clearly it should be.
