Comment:

 Blocking someone depends on your own server having support for it
 (although if you're blocking someone, Pidgin will locally ignore messages
 from them). Blocking is supported on some, but not all servers (those
 that support the XEP-0191 specification for blocking, as well as Google
 Talk).

 I can't reproduce the first part of #2. When I block my non-gtalk
 (Pidgin) account from within the gmail web interface, in Pidgin I get:
 {{{
 (22:49:18) blist: Updating buddy status for darkrain42 at gmail.com (XMPP)
 (22:49:21) jabber: Recv (ssl)(102): <presence type='unavailable'
 to='paul at dev.darkrain42.org' from='darkrain42 at gmail.com/gmail.B3DA4D5E'/>
 }}}
 and the google talk buddy appeared to sign off. Furthermore, I see the
 same thing when I block via Pidgin.

 It's by design that when the gtalk person blocks/removes you, they are not
 removed from your roster (buddy list). It's just unfortunate that Google
 Talk bounces messages with an error under those circumstances.
