 GnomeShell is now the default Gnome desktop at least for Fedora. Empathy
 has integration with GnomeShell and while I still prefer Pidgin for many
 reasons, I do like this feature. Izhar Firdaus has written a GnomeShell
 extension which integrates Pidgin with the shell however; Pidgin has no
 background mode so I find myself not noticing the waiting messages and I
 still have an IM window to contend with. The GnomeShell extension can be
