 It occurs to me that most of the product mentioned by the user here use a
 Unicode capable font by default.  Switching the product default to Arial
 Unicode MS (Normal), seems to work fine for all of the foreign characters
 I need working with Chinese and Indian languages.

 The user above does have a point that this is an expectation of all
 products these days, and it might not be too difficult to set it up that
 way by default.
