 I'm not a pidgin developer, but a guy at my site had a similar problem. He
 could see formatting when composing a message but not for incoming or
 outgoing messages in the conversation window, even though incoming XMPP
 formatting instructions were there. It turned out to be the "Conversation
 Colors" plugin - if that's enabled, make sure "Ignore incoming format" is
 not checked. HTH.
