Comment:

 Are you using the libnotify plugin for pidgin? Do you get the odd
 duplicate/etc. windows when you use the libnotify popups to bring up the
 conversation windows? Does disabling that plugin cause the duplicate
 window/etc. problem to stop?

 Does turning sounds off in pidgin prevent the 100% cpu usage spike? Does
 changing GTK+ themes? Do any other events in pidgin cause such a spike?

 What plugins do you have loaded in pidgin?
