 I'm now usin Pidgin 2.10.0 un Ubuntu 11.10 and I have the same problem
 with MSN buddy avatars. Buddies can't see my avatar either.

 I already cleared icon/avatar cache directory (~/.purple/icons) but
 problem persists.

 The problem ocurrs only with Pidgin. Using meebo, Empathy or emesene I
 always see updated buddy avatars. If they could solve this, why not
 Pidgin?

 I see that when a buddy logs in to MSN via Web interface (no Windows Live
 desktop application) is more probably that I can see in Pidgin his/her
 updated avatar.

 The same problem with buddy display names: I can't see all updated display
 names in Pidgin.
