 After your suggestion that images might be the cause, I turned off showing
 buddy details (so icons do not show up automatically) and have not had a
 freeze yet. To further investigate, I found out the size of Kixxx
 Chandrxxxxxx's image (as well as a few others) is a few megabytes or
 sometimes even more (people being logged in or not also explains the
 variability of the problem.

 I'm still a bit confused as to why the 32-bit machines did not have this
 problem, but that detail (being 32-bit) is probably coincidence, as they
 also likely had an older version of pidgin (this problem has occurred for
 me since 2.7.x). Is something different about how icons are fetched in
 relatively recent versions?
