 I have been able to reproduce the same problem with the Forefront TMG
 client installed.

 The older ISA 2004/2006 client does not have the same problem, even when
 used against the same TMG server.

 To get it working with the new TMG client, here's the solution that worked
 for me:

 On the Forefront TMG Server, add a new client setting (click Networking on
 the navigation tree, and choose 'Configure Forefront TMG Client Settings'
 under the Network Tasks heading in the Tasks area on the right.

 Add a new setting with the following parameters:

 Application: pidgin
 Key: NameResolution
 Value: L

 This forces Pidgin's DNS requests to be resolved locally instead of being
 forwarded to the TMG server by the TMG client. This has completely
 resolved the crash on startup for me.
