 I was having the same issue after upgrading to ubuntu 11.10. Turned out it
 was my own mistake in setting up Gnome proxy. We have an HTTP/HTTPS proxy,
 but I also had Socks host set up in gnome proxy settings. Pidgin first
 checks for socks host gconf settings, and if it is non-empty, tries to use
 SOCKS5 rather than HTTP. Removing "Socks Host" entry from the gnome
 network proxy settings did the trick.
