 It looks like OpenOffice no longer provides the dictionaries as .zip files
 -- downloaded them always fails with a timeout, even trying to go to the
 site in question using a web browser or ftp tool.

 OTOH, the dictionaries are now published as extensions, here:

 http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/dictionaries

 They are .oxt files, which are just renamed .zip files with some extra
 stuff. Unpacking one into the appropriate directory and restarting enables
 spell check to work again. But a random user would probably not be able to
 figure this out.

 I suspect the installer could easily be modified to fetch the new ones.
