 The latest versions of MSN use direct file transfers direct from user to
 user. But I guess Microsoft still supports the old proxied file transfers
 (and why it's slow) for old versions of MSN and maybe for people who can't
 use a direct connection due to some router issue etc.

 Since older versions of Pidgin don't support direct connection the MSN
 servers probably fall back to the old, slower, working one.

 There is an option in Pidgin to disable direct connections under an MSN
 account. That may help...
