 By the way, you probably won't be able to see any difference from the
 patch without a widget to the left of the Buddy List.  If it helps, you
 can test with [https://github.com/dm0-/window_merge the plugin] by setting
 its preference to attach conversations on the left side of the Buddy List
 window.  The difference from the attached patch should then be visible,
 especially when resizing the window and panes.
