 I realize that isn't an Ubuntu support forum. I opened a bug with them as
 well.

 On the pidgin website ( http://pidgin.im/download/linux/ ) it says:

 We do not provide pre-built packages for most Linux and Unix
 distributions. '''We recommend installing Pidgin using your operating
 system's standard package management tool'''.
 }}}

 I followed the instructions on the website and I found this bug. Pidgin
 suggests people take this route; it is currently susceptible to the issue
 described.
