Comment:

 I didn't expect it to solve the problem (though I certainly hoped it
 would) but at least you are using a more normal connection mechanism at
 this point and that's a good thing.

 pidgin isn't killing the connection because of a failed ping (the message
 would be different). This still looks like something on the server side
 (or something in the middle) is having issues with the connection and
 terminating it.

 Does this happen very shortly after you connect? Is the period of time
 always (roughly) the same? Does this happen sporadically or randomly? Is
 there anything else about the problem that you can think of that might be
 helpful?

 If you want to get a packet capture of the connection and disconnect that
 might tell us something (but will probably just confirm that the "remote
 end" is terminating the connection on you which won't tell us much).
