 I'd say the default behavior is annoying for me too for two reasons:
 firstly, as mentioned above, because of increased power consumption of my
 laptop hdd and secondly because I use dropbox to synchronize buddy
 lists/pidgin logs over my computers and the popup about "blist.xml" being
 constantly changed is very distracting.
