 I'm hitting the exactly same problem. I'm also using dual-screen but not
 sure if this is related as the problem happened just a minute ago with the
 second monitor not attached.

 To answer the above questions:
 Q1: Do you run with the pidgin buddy list window docked to the side of
 your screen?
 A1: No.
 Q2: Is the area that icons cannot use the area normally covered by the
 pidgin buddy list window?
 A2: No.
 Q3: When you come out of sleep mode where is your buddy list window?
 A3: Most of time it's minimized in systray.
 Q4: Does displaying and closing it "fix" things?
 A4: No. Have to restart Pidgin.

 I'm using Dell E6420 with Win7 Pro 64-bit.
