Comment:

 Sorry, that was it. When I removed my old version of Pidgin, I
 accidentally left some libpurple files on /usr/lib and the new Pidgin was
 using those instead of the ones in /usr/local/lib. I have removed those
 files and now it is using the new ones and the problem has been fixed.
