 RTC's comment also worked for me; however, because this has clearly been
 asked several times, I felt this question and answer should definitely be
 added to the Facebook entry in the Pidgin FAQ.

 I took the initiative of adding an FAQ entry (see "Why can't Pidgin seem
 to send Facebook messages?"):

 Any feedback or improvements to that entry would be welcome.
