 Oh, it's not the xmpp protocol that causes this: the icons are just fine
 for a long time, and then something happens to corrupt them and mix them
 up.  I have seen images containing snippets of other images, and I have
 seen images containing snippets of apparently random data.  It smells like
 an undersized buffer to me.  Probably a glaring vulnerability and security
 hole, if anyone can get to the bottom of it.
